Discovering the Rich Heritage of Eger Wine Region: From Legends to Turkish Baths

Nestled in the rolling hills of northern Hungary lies the historic Eger wine region, a treasure trove of vinicultural delights and captivating tales. Renowned for its bold and robust red wines, none is more emblematic than Egri Bikavér, the legendary Bull's Blood of Eger.

Do you know?

Legend has it that during the Turkish siege of Eger Castle in the 16th century, the defenders, fortified by the local red wine, including Egri Bikavér, displayed such strength and valor that the Turks believed they must have been invigorated by the blood of bulls mixed with the wine. Thus, the name "Bull's Blood" was born, symbolizing the courage and resilience of the Eger people.

The echoes of the region's tumultuous history reverberate through its charming streets and historic landmarks, including the iconic Eger Castle, a testament to the city's defiance against the Ottoman invaders. As we wandered through its ancient walls, we couldn't help but marvel at the indomitable spirit of the past, preserved in the very stones of the fortress.

Venturing into the picturesque Szépasszony Valley, or "Valley of the Beautiful Women," we indulged in the art of wine tasting, savoring the velvety richness of Egri Bikavér and the crisp elegance of other local varietals.

Our oenophilic journey took an unexpected turn when we stumbled upon a hidden gem – a cellar offering a rare vintage: a 1977 Szürkebarát (Pinot Gris) white wine. With each sip, we were transported back in time, the wine revealing layers of complexity and history, a testament to the region's winemaking prowess and the enduring legacy of its terroir.

Amidst our vinous adventures, we also embraced the therapeutic pleasures of Eger's famed Turkish baths, a nod to the city's multicultural heritage. Immersing ourselves in the soothing waters, we found relaxation and rejuvenation, a perfect complement to the sensory delights of the wine country.

Join us as we invite you to discover the beauty, history, and exquisite wines of Eger.
